I just saw the movie Beastly, based on the book by my friend Alex Flinn, and I rushed home to email her this list:
What I loved about the Beastly movie:
1) Casting. Alex Pettyfer and V. Hudgens were perfect, I thought. And Neil Patrick Harris stole the show. I also love that Vanessa looks like a real girl, with thighs and everything. And can we talk about Mary Kate Olsen as the witch? Sublime. Right down to her stripper shoes. I think she used her own wardrobe for this movie.
2) The dialogue. Sharp. And true to your book.
3) The pacing. I liked the build-up of their romance and the way time was depicted. I was on the edge of my seat by the time she said, "I love you." Anticipation. Nice.
4) The make up. How cool was the beast with his "Embrace the Suck" eyebrows? He was both scary and cool-looking, which makes it so much more believable that she could fall in love with him. In fact, by the end of the movie he was attractive in a strange way. Makes me totally understand how Heidi Klum fell in love with Seal. Or Rachel Evan Wood with Marilyn Manson.
5) The overall imagery. What a sleek, slick school with its white walls and shiny floors. The house his father sent him to was just as I imagined it when I read your book.
6) The music. Wistful. Very coffee-house. Except for the rave-type party music at the beginning.
7) That I could take my younger kid. The only question he had was to ask what O.D. meant. Easy answer. Over Done. Which, of course means the man ate steak that was too cooked and got sick. Just kidding! I explained what taking too many pills does. Thanks for the teachable moment!

So, girl, can you believe this really happened??? You inspire me!

PS - now that I read this email over, I think I need to copy and paste it and make it a blog post. If I ever get off my butt and manage to blog again.
